Hello potential Queer Youth Prom Chaperones!
The youth of Out for Equity are planning their fabulous Queer Youth Prom and this year’s theme is COSMIC QUEERS. Some of you remember the success of the event from previous years or may have heard me talking about it this year. It’s an amazing time where LGBTQ+ youth and allies ages 14-20 get to have a full and inclusive Prom experience. Last year we had almost 300 youth in attendance, it was amazing.
This year we are hoping that you would like to volunteer to chaperone the event which will be heldSaturday, April 25th, 7-10pm in the Anderson Center on the Hamline University Campus. It’s actually directly across the street from Hancock Rec Center where we have had Queer Youth Prom in the past.
There are three shifts to choose from:
Shift 1: 5-8pm (Set-up & Chaperoning half the Prom)
Shift 2: 6:45-10pm (Chaperoning the Prom)
Shift 3: 8-11pm (Chaperoning half the Prom & Take-down)
We are hoping for at least 30-35 chaperones this year. And while the youth on the planning committee will be helping to set-up we really would like for adults to do most of the take-down so the youth can do their fun after Prom things like going out to eat. Please let me know if you are interested in helping out and which shift/s you would like to take.
With the fabulous theme of COSMIC QUEERS this year the cosplay (costumes) are going to be a mix of many different space themed goodness. Please feel free to wear a costume &/or formal to semi-formal attire. We HIGHLY encourage EVERYONE to dress up to add to the festive nature of the evening.
If you would like to volunteer we also need for folks to come to our office at 345 Plato Blvd, St. Paul for an hour long volunteer training just to make sure we are all on the same page about what is expected the night of, how to work with LGBTQ+ youth including things like pronoun usage and other specifics. Here are the two times, please let me know which one you would like to come to.
Wednesday, April 22nd, 6:30-7:30pm
Thursday , April 23rd, 6:30-7:30pm
Attached are the two forms I’ll need you to return to me ASAP. One is a volunteer application form and one is a background check form. If you work for SPPS or volunteered for Prom last year you don’t need to do these forms. Thank you all so much for being interested and please let me know what shift/s you would like to volunteer and if you have any questions or concerns. Yea for Queer & Trans youth!
